Extensive information on the use of cookies

Definitions
Cookies are small text files that the websites visited by the users send to their terminals, where they are stored to be then retransmitted during the next visit. Third party cookies are, on the other hand, are set up by a different website that the one the user is visiting. This because there may be some elements (images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages of other domains, ect.) on each site that are found on different servers from the one that is being visited.
Types of cookies
Based on the characteristics and the use of cookies, there can be different categories:
- Technical cookies, which are those used only to “enable the transfer of communication of a electronic communication web, or in the strictly necessary way so that the supplier of a service has the required information from the user to give this service” (art.122, comma 1 of the Code). They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the holder or manager of the website. They can be divided in browsing or session cookies, that guarantee a normal use and browsing of the website; analytics cookies assimilated with technical cookies where used directly by the site’s manager to gather information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site; functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a series of criteria chosen in order to enhance the service offered. Consent of the user isn’t requested to install these cookies, while it’s mandatory to give the information in accordance to art. 13 of the Code, which the site’s manager, if using only these devices, may provide in the terms he considers most appropriate.
- Profiling cookies, which are used to create the user’s profile and to send advertising messages in line with the user’s preferences shown during web browsing. Considering the particular invasiveness that these devices can have in the user’s privacy, the European and Italian laws state that the user must be adequately informed and give its valid consent. Article 122 of the Code refers to these where “information filing in the user’s terminal or access to filed information are allowed only on the condition that the user has expressed its consent after being informed with simplified modalities as per art. 13, comma 3 (art. 122, comma 1, of the Code). This site does not use profiling cookies.
